Ingredients for congested skin

The best skincare for congested skin is formulated with ingredients to deeply clean pores without being overly abrasive to the skin’s surface.

Look for moisture boosting ingredients in products for congested skin too - hydration prevents the overproduction of oil that leads to clogged pores.

— GLYCOLIC ACID: Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid, a potent exfoliator for the topmost layers of the skin - removing dead cells which clog pores.

— ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Activated charcoal has benefits for all skin types, especially congested skin. It’s anti-fungal and antibacterial properties fight bacteria while drawing impurities out from within the pore.

— BENTONITE & KAOLIN CLAY: Known for its ability to draw out toxins, heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals from the skin Bentonite also soaks up extra oil. Kaolin clay has more mild absorption properties than bentonite, which makes it ideal for dry to normal skin.

— HYALURONIC ACID: Hyaluronic acid draws water into the cells and holds onto it for rapid hydration benefits - it can hold 1000x its weight in water. It deeply hydrates, keeping skin plump and minimises fine lines.

There are several steps you can take to reduce congestion, one of the most important is to use an exfoliant containing AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) as this will help to remove dead skin cell build up which leads to blocked pores, helping to minimise congestion and blackheads.

You can also incorporate the ingredient Niacinamide into your skincare routine which will help to regulate oil flow and prevent sebum from clogging pores, inhibiting congestion and blackheads as well as improving the overall appearance of pores.

You will be able to feel your congestion by running a clean hand over your skin. If you feel bumps that aren’t active or cystic breakouts, generally this is congestion.

Congested skin is a build of dead skin cells under the surface so can have underlying bumps that never turn into ‘active’ breakouts. Blackheads are also another sign of congestion.

Regular exfoliation is the most effective method of decongesting the skin as it will remove a build up of dead skin cells. Even though excess dead skin cells are to blame for congestion, it is important to make sure you are using the right type of exfoliation product to remove the congested layer. We recommend to avoid using harsh, physical exfoliation, instead opt for a chemical exfoliant with binding agents like charcoal which attaches to dirt and toxins to draw them out of the pores.
